Leeuwarden, music and literature!

The Explore the North festival uses Leeuwarden city centre as stage for writers, musicians, dancers and actors from across the world. Wander this winter weekend through a web of alleys and literature, cosy churches and music. Discover how the northern city reveals itself to dreamers and thinkers.

Festival locations, opening hours and programme

The fifth edition of Explore the North will take place on Friday 24 November and Saturday 25 November. On Friday, the first acts will begin in the evening, while on Saturday things will begin in the early afternoon. We will soon be revealing more about the wonderful locations in Leeuwarden city centre which will be part of Explore the North.

Heart of the festival Blokhuispoort

Warm yourself at a roaring fire, meet other festival visitors and enjoy the special Explore menu at Proefverlof restaurant and bar. Your Explore the North 2017 experience will start in heart of the festival Blokhuispoort!

You can purchase tickets and pick up festival wristbands at the heart of the festival Blokhuispoort during the following periods:

Friday 24 November | 12 noon – 11 PM

Saturday 25 November | 12 noon – 11 PM

Wheelchair accessibility

Most of the main locations and the Explore the North festival centre are accessible to wheelchairs, but unfortunately there are a few exceptions. Except for Bald’r, Eestroom and Podium Asteriks, all of the festival locations are accessible for wheelchairs.. We can be reached via [email protected]

Getting there

It is a 15-minute walk from Central Station to Blokhuispoort. The best place to park is at one of the nearby car parks: Klanderij, Hoeksterend, Zaailand or Oldehove. Bicycles can be parked in one of the streets surrounding Blokhuispoort.


Space is limited at the intimate Explore the North venues, so be sure to be on time since at all locations full=full applies.
