Expeditions

In collaboration with A Guide to Leeuwarden

Would you like to join an expedition across Leeuwarden? Explore the North expeditions will teach you about places hidden away throughout the city. Someone from A Guide to Leeuwarden will be accompanying a group of explorers on a journey from one special location to the other, where brief performances are given in an intimate setting. We are still keeping the routes secret for now, but can promise you that you will be learning about the stories behind a number of tucked-away locations.

This year, expeditions will be taking place on all three festival days: Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There are two different expeditions, both lasting 1½ hours.

FRI 19 Nov 15:00 - 18:00 | SAT 20 & SUN 21 Nov 14:00 - 19:00

IT GELOK FAN FRYSLÂN - TRYATER

What makes Fryslân and Leeuwarden inhabitants happy? Tryater asked a number of them and processed their response in a long poem on happiness. While listening to the poem, you will pass by special places and objects on your walk, which will invite you to view yourself and of a city from a different perspective.

Sharpen your senses and find out what makes Fryslân happy!
It gelok fan Fryslân could be experienced in a number of Frisian towns in the summers of 2020 and 2021. A special urban edition has been created especially for Explore the North, allowing participants to enjoy unexpected aspects of Leeuwarden.

De It gelok fan Fryslân audio route takes about an hour to complete on foot. If you have a festival wristband, you can book a ticket on the Tryater website.

PROJECT OVERTONE - BOUKE GROEN

Every building has its own tone, pitch and sounds, its very own sound features. Composer and maker Bouke Groen has created a unique musical composition for Explore the North in spaces in the Stadhuis (city hall) on Hofplein square. In order to achieve this, he delved into the sound features of the Stadhuis, aided by technology and calculations.

The composition by Bouke Groen and Renske de Boer is sung a capella by the NHL Stendenkoor choir in various spaces, surrounded by the audience, who thus form part of the performance, since simply being present affects the space's acoustics. Project Overtone offers an intimate experience that will take you through the Stadhuis, leaving you understanding that you will never view another building or space in quite the same way again. Or listen to them.

Fri 19 Nov 19:15 - 21:15 | Sat 20 Nov 17:00 - 21:30
Sun 21 Nov 15:00 - 21:00

CÉLINE WIERDA - NEPEN

An audiovisual installation about solitude

Enjoying solitude, lonely but not alone, not being alone often enough, longing for solitude: for her audiovisual installation called NEPEN, Céline Wierda discussed solitude with a number of Leeuwarden residents. It has the effect on Céline of making her feel somewhat uncomfortable, yet at the same time she can also long for solitude. What does solitude actually mean to someone else and why does it have nothing to do with loneliness, despite so many people implying that this is the case?

NEPEN is an experience you go through on your own, in a space and accompanied by visuals and audio, taking place 12–21 November in the De Westerkerk in Leeuwarden.

An installation by Céline Wierda with music by Onna Limb and visuals by Jurjen Jellema.
