Musical, poetic and visual performance about the origin of Papiamento

Musical and spoken word collective VANIA will be taking you on a musical, poetic and visual journey to the origin of Papiamento. ‘Papia’ means talking in Papiamento (i.e. the talking itself, the conversation), which is the language spoken on Curaçao, Bonaire and Aruba. The history of this language is intriguing, since it evolved in a time when people from many corners of the earth came to live on Curaçao. Despite major socioeconomic inequality and abuse, the need arose for a new way of communicating with each other. Papiamento is living proof that language can overcome social and cultural differences. Misunderstanding was the flashpoint for something new.
