INSPIRATION FROM SWEDISH POETRY

‘Less is more’ turned out to hold true for SUMIE too, when writing her debut album which was released in 2013. Her songs, somewhere between Scandinavian and Japanese folk, remain minimalist in a manner that comes across as only natural: in the late evening she would softly play her guitar as her children were already in bed. For her second album she wandered between library, cinema and other cultural locales seeking inspiration. This led her to come across the Swedish poem ‘Divine Wind’ by Daniel Klevheden, which she transformed charmingly into an English song. For SUMIE, it formed the outset for the other eight tracks on Lost in Light and helped her to grasp the potential of the songs’ reticence.
