WAR OF INDEPENDENCE VIEWED THROUGH THE EYES OF THE LAST WITNESSES

David van Reybrouck, a Belgian Fleming, is a cultural historian, archaeologist and writer, producing non-fiction, work for the theatre and poetry. His stories are informed by thorough research (interviews, conversations and archive work), which definitely also plays a vital role in shaping them. His narration is also true art, eclectic (in a catholic sense) and inventive. At Explore the North, we will be discussing Revolusi with him, his latest work about the war of independence in Indonesia. In the process of creating this work, he interviewed nearly 200 individuals – the last remaining witnesses – seeking them out in old-age homes, Japanese metropolises and on distant islands.
